What is the difference between cannabis tinctures and edibles?

Cannabis tinctures and cannabis edibles are popular methods of enjoying the benefits of cannabis without inhaling smoke. While both are the result of cannabis decarboxylation, they have distinct differences as a result of the fat-solvent medium that is infused with the decarbed cannabis.

Cannabis tinctures are extracts created by soaking the decarbed cannabis in alcohol or MCT oil. They are often taken sublingually (under the tongue) for quick absorption or added to cocktails, juices, and sodas, and they are also added to gelatins to create edible gummies. They enter the bloodstream quickly, and effects can be felt within 15 to 30 minutes. The high generally lasts between two and four hours. Tinctures are ideal for accurate and quick therapeutic dosing.

Cannabis edibles are infused with oils and butter included in recipes for baked goods, gummies, chocolates, desserts, and other foods. As the infused edibles pass through the digestive system, the potency of the THC is enhanced in the liver, delivering a more powerful high. Users may expect to begin feeling effects after a half hour or so, but it can take longer, so it’s important to allow time before taking another bite of an edible goodie to avoid overdoing it. Edibles provide a longer-lasting experience than both tinctures and smoked cannabis products, which makes them beneficial for providing hours of relaxation and treating conditions like insomnia. Labeling on commercial cannabis edible products should inform users for accurate dosages.
