Cannabis-derived vs botanical terpenes

Here is a menu secret: most high-THC vape carts do not taste like cannabis on their own. The flavor comes from terpenes added after extraction, and where those terpenes come from is the difference worth knowing.

Why carts need added terpenes at all

Distillate, the base of most vape carts, is made by molecular distillation: a process designed to isolate a single cannabinoid at high purity. It strips terpenes by design, not by accident. What leaves the still is potent and nearly flavorless, so producers re-add terpenes for taste, aroma, and viscosity. The question is which terpenes go back in.

Botanical terpenes: borrowed flavor

A limonene molecule from an orange peel is chemically identical to one from cannabis, and botanical terpenes, sourced from unrelated plants like citrus, lavender, and pine, are far cheaper. What they cannot replicate is the full blend: a cannabis strain's character comes from dozens of terpenes and minor compounds in specific proportions. A handful of borrowed notes approximates a strain the way a keyboard ringtone approximates a song.

Cannabis-derived terpenes: the real profile

Cannabis-derived terpenes (CDT) are extracted from cannabis itself, capturing the strain's actual blend rather than a sketch of it. They cost more because they are pulled from real cannabis material in small yields, and they are the reason a good CDT cart tastes like the strain on its label instead of like generic "cannabis flavor." Our in-house extraction uses cannabis-derived terpenes, never the borrowed kind; it is one of the standards we refuse to trade away, and you can taste the difference it makes in TRENDI and Medizin products.

Reading the shelf

Premium menus distinguish CDT carts, and live products go a step further: live resin and live rosin carts carry the plant's own terpenes straight through the process, never stripped and re-added at all. Whatever you choose, the terpene profile, not the THC number, is what shapes the experience; our terpene explainer shows how to read one.
