Terpenes, explained
Terpenes are the aromatic compounds that give every cannabis flower its smell, its flavor, and a lot of how it feels. They are not unique to cannabis: the same molecules make pepper peppery, lavender floral, and citrus bright.
Why terpenes matter more than the THC number
It is easy to shop by THC percentage alone. But the percentage only tells you how potent something is, not how it will smell, taste, or feel. The blend of terpenes, working alongside the cannabinoids, shapes the aroma, the flavor, and the character of the experience. It is a big part of why two products with identical THC numbers can feel completely different. This interplay between terpenes and cannabinoids is often called the entourage effect.

Each terpene has a signature aroma and a character that many people commonly associate with it. The lean is the strain category that terpene tends to show up in.

Where indica and sativa come from
Notice the leans above. That is not a coincidence. A lot of what people mean by indica or sativa actually traces back to the terpene blend. Myrcene-heavy flower is a big part of the classic relaxed, indica reputation, while bright, terpinolene- and limonene-forward flower sits behind many of the energetic, sativa-labeled cultivars. Start with aromas and characters you already enjoy. If you love citrus and an upbeat feel, look for limonene-forward products; if you want something calm and floral, look for linalool.
