Indica, sativa, hybrid
Indica, sativa, and hybrid are the three traditional categories dispensaries use to sort strains: indica as shorthand for relaxing, body-forward effects, sativa for uplifting, heady effects, and hybrid for the middle ground. They are a useful starting point, but a batch's full chemical profile predicts how it will feel far better than the category alone.
The traditional shorthand
- Indica: often described as relaxing and body-forward, the classic evening label.
- Sativa: often described as uplifting and heady, the daytime label.
- Hybrid: a blend of the two, leaning one way or the other.
It is a handy rough guide, and budtenders still reach for it because it is the language customers already know.
What actually drives the experience
Here is the part most people never hear: on its own, the indica or sativa label is a weak predictor. Two products both labeled sativa can feel nothing alike. What matters more is the full chemical profile, the cannabinoids (THC, CBD, and the minor ones) and the terpenes together. That combination, sometimes called the chemotype, is the real signal for how something will feel.
How to shop smarter
- Look at the THC and CBD content, not just one big number.
- Check the dominant terpenes (see our terpenes guide).
- Note the specific cultivar, the actual strain name, and what you liked about it.
- Ask the budtender about the effect you are after, not just the category.
Treat indica, sativa, and hybrid as the first word, not the last. Browse the menu with the full profile in mind.
