Grape Ape strain: what the lab panels show

Grape Ape is widely told as Apothecary Genetics' cross of Mendocino Purps, Skunk and an Afghani, a name at least one other seed company has sold from another cross. Among the products on the Las Vegas superstore's shelf that carry a lab panel, Grape Ape comes as three vapes from Buddies and Death Row Records.

What it is

By the usual account, Apothecary Genetics bred it from Mendocino Purps, Skunk and an Afghani; one strain database names the company's founder as Bret Bogue. One seed listing shows Barney's Farm selling a version from a different cross, Granddaddy Grape and Skunk #1, so the name may cover more than one plant.

Its breeder lists first place at the Green Cup in 2005 and 2006. All of that is the circulated history, not a lab fact.

What is on our shelf now

Among the products on the Las Vegas superstore's shelf that carry a lab panel, Grape Ape comes as three vapes from Buddies and Death Row Records. The vapes test 91.9% to 95.6% THC. Vapes are extracts, so their THC reads far higher than plain flower's. Myrcene leads all three of its panels (earthy and musky, with ripe mango, in the terpene guide's words), with alpha-pinene and beta-pinene in the top three of every panel. Our per-batch grade, set by each panel rather than by the name, calls the batches on our shelf indica-hybrid.

What that means for you

With more than one seed company's cross sold under the name, two products called Grape Ape can be different plants. Read each batch's terpenes and its grade on the five-class spectrum, which sets it by its own panel rather than by the name.

Questions people ask about Grape Ape

Is Grape Ape indica or sativa?

Grape Ape is usually described as an indica. That is its reputation, not a lab fact. Our per-batch grade, set by each panel rather than by the name, calls the batches on our shelf indica-hybrid.

How strong is Grape Ape?

The vapes test 91.9% to 95.6% THC. Vapes are extracts, so their THC reads far higher than plain flower's. THC is a batch figure, not a property of the name, so the next batch can differ.

What does Grape Ape smell and taste like?

Myrcene leads all three of its panels (earthy and musky, with ripe mango, in the terpene guide's words), with alpha-pinene and beta-pinene in the top three of every panel. Terpenes are a large part of a strain's smell and flavor, which is why we read the panel rather than the name; sulfur compounds a terpene panel does not measure add the skunky note some strains carry.

What effects does Grape Ape have?

Effects vary from person to person and from batch to batch, so we do not promise any. What a panel tells you is the chemistry: which terpenes lead, and the grade it earns on the five-class spectrum, shown in this page's shelf table for each batch whose panel carries them.

Who bred Grape Ape?

Apothecary Genetics, by the usual account, from Mendocino Purps, Skunk and an Afghani. One seed listing shows Barney's Farm selling a version of its own from a different cross, so seed bought under the name can differ.
