Gelato strain: what the lab panels show

Gelato is the strain widely told as Sunset Sherbet x Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies, credited to Sherbinski. Among the products on the Las Vegas superstore's shelf that carry a lab panel, Gelato comes as two infused pre-rolls, three vapes and one concentrate from Stiiizy, Rove and Verano.

What it is

In the usual telling, Sherbinski, of the Bay Area's Cookie Fam, crossed Sunset Sherbet with Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies. That is reputation, not a lab fact; the panels below are.

What is on our shelf now

Among the products on the Las Vegas superstore's shelf that carry a lab panel, Gelato comes as two infused pre-rolls, three vapes and one concentrate from Stiiizy, Rove and Verano. The infused pre-rolls test 35% to 40.7% THC, the vapes test 84.2% to 90% THC and the concentrate tests 74% THC. Vapes and concentrates are extracts and infused pre-rolls carry extract, so their THC reads far higher than plain flower's. Caryophyllene leads four of its six panels (warm and peppery, clove and black pepper, in the terpene guide's words), with limonene in the top three of every panel. Our per-batch grade, set by each panel rather than by the name, calls four of them indica, hybrid and sativa-hybrid; the other two are not graded.

What the panels showed when we wrote this guide

Caryophyllene and limonene were on all five panels. Caryophyllene led two outright: the Verano Reserve live badder at 2.08% with myrcene 1.85% behind (64 mg/g total, the highest of the five) and the STIIIZY 40's infused pre-roll pack at 1.74%. Limonene led two: the Rove cart at 1.24% and the STIIIZY all-in-one at 0.83%. The STIIIZY pod was a near tie, caryophyllene 1.05% and limonene 1.04%. Grades: indica for the badder and the infused pack, hybrid for the two STIIIZY vapes, sativa-hybrid for the Rove cart. THC read 33.6% in the infused pack, 74.0% in the badder, and 89.6% to 91.3% in the vapes.

What that means for you

Shop Gelato by format, not by name. Those three vapes were distillate, which leaves the still without terpenes, so each panel read the blend its maker added back (the terpene-sourcing guide explains). Even STIIIZY's own pod and all-in-one, with the same two terpenes on top, balanced them differently: a near tie in the pod, limonene ahead in the all-in-one. The live badder, a live resin, kept much of the fresh plant's profile. Mochi, widely told as a strain of the gelato school, has a guide of its own, and so does Lemon Cherry Gelato; the family tie in a name is reputation, not a lab fact.

Questions people ask about Gelato

Is Gelato indica or sativa?

Gelato is usually described as a hybrid. That is its reputation, not a lab fact. Our per-batch grade, set by each panel rather than by the name, calls four of them indica, hybrid and sativa-hybrid; the other two are not graded.

How strong is Gelato?

The infused pre-rolls test 35% to 40.7% THC, the vapes test 84.2% to 90% THC and the concentrate tests 74% THC. Vapes and concentrates are extracts and infused pre-rolls carry extract, so their THC reads far higher than plain flower's. THC is a batch figure, not a property of the name, so the next batch can differ.

What does Gelato smell and taste like?

Caryophyllene leads four of its six panels (warm and peppery, clove and black pepper, in the terpene guide's words), with limonene in the top three of every panel. Terpenes are a large part of a strain's smell and flavor, which is why we read the panel rather than the name; sulfur compounds a terpene panel does not measure add the skunky note some strains carry.

What effects does Gelato have?

Effects vary from person to person and from batch to batch, so we do not promise any. What a panel tells you is the chemistry: which terpenes lead, and the grade it earns on the five-class spectrum, shown in this page's shelf table for each batch whose panel carries them.

Who created Gelato?

In the usual telling, Sherbinski, of the Bay Area's Cookie Fam, crossed Sunset Sherbet with Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies. That is reputation, not a lab fact.
